Today we celebrate the birthday of one of history's truly great men, a man who changed forever the way we view our universe. So, join with me and celebrate the birthday of...

...Sir Isaac Newton!

[With thanks to Richard Dawkins, the New Statesman, and Head of Legal, in that order!]

  1. F = Gm1m2 / r2

Curiously... Wikipedia thinks he was born on 4th January...

Christmas day is endless... so I am opening a bottle....

  2. Ah, the Law of Universal Gravitation - remember it when you've drunk too much Rioja!

[He was born on the 25th December, in accordance with the Julian calendar, in use when he was born. :-)]

  3. and of course he said: "Gravity explains the motions of the planets, but it cannot explain who set the planets in motion. God governs all things and knows all that is or can be done."

Not that I'm making a point...

  4. Newton was of course a man of religion, but it is for his massive contribution to science that he is best remembered. Nowadays, the argument that 'we don't know the reason for this, therefore it must be God' is quite rightly ridiculed for being no argument at all.
