The Audacity of Hope

It wasn't our election, but it will surely affect us all. I'm so pleased that America has made the choice it has, for surely now at last the words of Thomas Jefferson will ring true: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal". Let that message spread across the world.

  1. Yes he was. Now there's an irony.

  2. The sentiment is spot on even if the circumstances were, indeed ironic.

    Two points:

    1. He says men - I'm not sure when women got the vote in USA.

    2. "Created" - now there's a word charged with meaning! I'm surprised you let that one pass, John!!! It seems to chime more with the idea of being "equal under God". If we were to substitue the word with "born" it is sad that not everyone is born equal. To this day too many are born in under priveleged circumsatnces or into poverty.

These are churlish comments on a day we can all celebrate - a great day for democracy. And possibly one of the best speech makers I have ever heard. Why did they ever choose Bush?

  3. Hi Paul,

Yes, I could have added [and women], but I take 'men' to mean both sexes.

When I wrote the post I wondered whether some wise guy would pick up on the word 'created'! Of course, the passage goes on: "that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights". Still, today I will let that pass... ;-)

I agree, he's the best orator since Kennedy

  4. "I agree, he's the best orator since Kennedy".

Oh dear, and we know what happened to him...
