Child support: The hide-your-head-in-the-sand defence

What struck me about this story was not so much the fact that the father owes nearly $100,000 in child support, but rather his informative explanation: "I just didn't pay child support". You might say that you can't argue with that but, as the judge pointed out: "It takes quite a bit of work avoiding child support to get to this level of a felony".

  1. Given he is unemployed, can he opt to go to prison in lieu of it? Would it still be there when he gets out? Isn't this giving him no way out other than becoming a fugitive or something. Just wondering if I were him what I would do. I'd probably go for the prison option if it cleared the debt, if not then flee the juristiction (the state?) I suppose.

  2. Prison certainly looks likely, although whether that will clear the debt, I'm not sure.
